About Me

Welcome to Homeschool RVA! I am Cristal Jenkins, a homeschool mom to 10 and 13 year old boys. I have been providing support to the homeschool community for the past 12 years in Chester, VA. I have been an evaluator and assessed hundreds of children throughout the Commonwealth to provide proof of progress for their learning throughout the school year. I look forward to working with you and your child(ren) to help support you on your homeschool journey.

Testing and Evaluations

Evaluations

Summary of § 22.1-254.1(C) of the Virginia Code states that “The parent who elects to provide home instruction shall provide the division superintendent by August 1 following the school year in which the child has received home instruction with either
(i) evidence that the child has attained a composite score in or above the fourth stanine (23rd percentile) on ANY nationally normed standardized achievement test or
(ii) an evaluation or assessment which the division superintendent determines indicates that the child is achieving an adequate level of educational growth and progress.” [Emphasis added]

What is an Evaluation like?

What type of students benefit from an evaluation vs. standardized testing?

  • Evaluations are for ALL students!

  • A homeschool evaluation is a CELEBRATION of student learning

  • Evaluations focus on the individual child and their personal growth vs a test that compares them to their peers

  • No portfolio needed. Work samples, photos and the student describing their school year is all that is required

  • The evaluation process can be more expensive than a standardized test, but you also get an opportunity to trouble-shoot with your evaluator and plan for the next school year.
